Club History

BRIGHOUSE BADMINTON CLUB
Promoting Badminton Since 1973

1973. Brighouse Badminton Club was formed in September. Eight people who had attended a badminton beginners evening class at Lightcliffe School. They wanted to continue and develop their badminton experiences, but found that gaining membership of existing local clubs very difficult. Club night was held at Eastfield School on Friday evenings.

1974. The Club became competitive. One team was entered into the Halifax Badminton League.

1976. Club membership rose to 28.Teams were entered into the Huddersfield League.

Over the ensuing years home matches were played at a range of venues including; Carr Green School, Reinswood school, Gomersal Civic Hall in Rastrick and Halifax Parish Church.

The Club climbed from the sixth division, with an occasional backward step! to gain first division status in the Huddersfield League. Three appearances in McGowan Trophy finals were achieved, winning once in 1988. Meanwhile in the Halifax League the club had a successful run in the Coyle Trophy competition with 4 winners and 2 runners-up spots between 1974 and 1981.

1988 The club wins the McGowan Trophy.

1989 The club moved to a newly built sports hall at Hipperholme Grammar School which remains the clubs home today.

1992 Club night was changed to Wednesday evening.

1999 The Halifax League was disbanded. The club expanded the number of teams participating in a new Huddersfield League.

2005 The club expanded it's competitive experience by entering three teams, 1 ladies and 2 men's, into the Bradford League.

2006 The club won Bradford Ladies Division 4 and Bradford men's div 5. The men's 2nd team gain promotion from Div 6.

2007 The club enjoys continued success in the Bradford League. The ladies win div 3, the men win div 4 and the men's 2nd team win div 5.

Over the years the club members have participated in numerous social activities including a Brighouse Gala float, the Halifax Bed race, car rallies, barbecues, hoe-downs, pie and pea suppers with an annual dinner-dance being held at the end of each season. The local hostelry is of course a welcome place after every club night.
